BuzzSouthAfrica has confirmed that the South African electricity public utility, Eskom is set to begin bulk power cuts in the Northern provinces.
As confirmed, Eskom will this week, start bulk power interruptions in the Free State, Northern Cape, and Limpopo provinces. Today, the power utility will implement power supply interruptions in several municipalities in the Northern Cape.
While the power cuts will begin with Douglas and Griekwastad in the Siyancuma Local Municipality, it will be extended to the towns of Van der Kloof, Phillipstown and Petrusville in the Renosterberg Local Municipality.
Similarly, Postmasburg in the Tsantsabane Local Municipality, Hopetown, and Strydenburg in the Thembelihle Municipality have all been scheduled to suffer power cuts today.
Thabazimbi, Ipelegeng, Regorogile X5 and 6 in Limpopo will suffer the same fate on Thursday, 21st September. In Free State, the power utility will implement bulk power cuts in the Nketoana Municipality come 27th September.
The towns that will be left without electricity are Petrus Steyn, Lindley, and Reitz. Apart from the Nketoana Municipality, the Mantsopa Municipality and the Tokologo Municipality have also been scheduled to have power interruptions on 27 September.
While Ladybrand, Excelsior, Tweespruit and Dawiesville are the towns that will be affected in Mantsopa Municipality, those that will be affected in Tokologo are Seretse, Boshof, and Dealsville.
That’s not all, Eskom specified that the towns of Brandfort, Theunissen, Verkeerdevlei, Windburg, Bothaville, Wesselsbron, Bethlehem, Paul Roux, Rosenekal, Fateng-Tse-Ntsho, Kroonstad, Steynsrus and Viljoenskroon will also suffer power interruptions the same day.
From what we gathered, Eskom’s decision to disconnect these municipalities was inspired by the non-payment of bills. The power utility said it’s mindful of the impact of supply interruptions on consumers. But then, specified that the decision to implement power cuts was necessary. Excerpts from a statement Eskom issued read: “Eskom remains mindful of the impact such supply interruptions will have on electricity consumers, thus the interruption of supply to municipalities for non-payment is always implemented as a last resort.”
