The result of a grueling competition and the record-breaking Idols SA season 13 was announced at the grand finale which took place at Carnival City in Johannesburg on Sunday evening. The season set a new record with one hundred million votes cast.

In the end, 17-year-old Paxton Fielies was crowned as the winner during a spectacular live show. The songstress is the second female winner in a row after a seven-season drought.

The Cape Town beauty joins previous Idols including Noma Khumalo, Karabo Mogane, Vincent Bones, Heinz Winckler, Anke Pietrangeli, Karin Kortje, Jody Williams, Jason Hartman, Sasha-Lee Davids, Dave van Vuuren, Khaya Mthethwa and Musa Sukwene.

While there were many talented singers aiming for the crown on the Idols SA season 13, Paxton Fielies and Mthokozisi Ndaba‚ 25‚ from KwaMashu in Durban‚ made the final two after months of battle against thousands of contestants. On Sunday at the grand finale, accompanied by the multi-award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir‚ Paxton performed Stand Up for Love by Destiny’s Child and Mthokozisi sang R. Kelly’s The Storm Is Over. They also collaborated on a remix of Back To The Beach by Kyle Deutsch and Shekinah.

Though both contestants garnered a strong fan base in the competition, Paxton outshined her rival and bagged the most votes to become one of the youngest winners of the prestigious title.

In addition to being crowned the winner, Paxton and Mthokozisi also walked away with a prize package worth R1.5m: R1m in cash, a Ford Focus 1.5 Ecoboost, R100 000 worth of fashion vouchers from Truworhts, Shure equipment, R78 000 worth of musical equipment from Yamaha and record deal from Gallo music.

It was a musical feast as some of SA’s top artists such as Boom Shaka, TKZee, Idols SA season 12 winner Noma, Somizi and his special guest Heavy K, in-house mentor Donald, Kwesta, Dj Tira, Distruction Boyz, Tipcee, NaakMusiq and Madness kept the mood alive.

The Idols top 10 opened the floor with a performance of Four Five Seconds by Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney.

Meanwhile, Idols SA season 13 runner-up stunned the South African media on Sunday night when he pulled a disappearing act and refused to attend the Mzansi Magic (DStv 161) post-show press conference after Paxton was crowned the winner. Mthokozisi’s seat behind his name card and microphone next to Paxton Fielies awkwardly remained conspicuously empty as seen below.

He sneaked out the moment Proverb announced the winner.
