Cyril Ramaphosa has been in a heated two-horse race with Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma whom the majority of voters rejected at the polls.
Ramaphosa’s excited supporters burst into a song when his name was announced as the incoming African National Congress president.
Ramaphosa was voted in by delegates gathered at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Joburg.
Although her backers always spoke publicly that they were confident that she will win, the delegates decided otherwise.
Coming into the conference Ramaphosa was backed by five provinces including Gauteng, Limpopo, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape and Western Cape, with 1469 branch nominations.
