The now ‘Independent’ Ma-E won’t make the same mistakes he made at Cashtime. As he builds his own music record label, Ma-E says he will not make the same mistakes he made when he was still at his former record label Cashtime and is determined to focus on himself.
Rapper Ma-E, who lately dropped his first album since he left cashtime, told Metro FM‘s Mo Flava and Masechaba Ndlovu that a lack of unity and focus was the main reason for the label’s collapse.
“I was a label owner at Cashtime. We had to push other artits, like with K.O and things didn’t work out well. Now that I have started Ghanda Ghanda productions I am really concentrating on myself. I am independent. I have to fund myself. I have to fund producers. I have to fund videos and marketing. Right now I have to focus on me.”
Talking on his time at Cashtime, Ma E said the exodus of talent like Nomuzi Mabena and Kid X happened when he was dropping his debut album and it threatened his solo career.
“Individual artists ended up doing our own things individually, not confirming with another guy. We ended up disconnecting. Unfortunately when I dropped my album, Township Councillor, all these things happened. I couldn’t really promote my album with everything I had invested in it because I was pushing it independently. It was a really tough time for me. I had to stop promoting the album because people were asking about Cashtime and not my album.”
The rapper told TshisaLIVE last year that he faced abuse after he released his album. He added that he wanted to put the negativity and dark days behind him and restart his career as an independent artist.
“I got a lot of negativity from social media and the people involved. I took a knock. I was part of the business and the fact that I had released an album while things were happening and people were leaving. People were saying that I couldn’t run a company and that I could not be a businessman and artists at the same time,” he said.
“It is like I am brand new in the industry and I want to prove myself again,” he added.
