Many tributes have been pouring out on social media following the news of Shoki Mokgapa’s passing, however, the dominant question surrounding the news has been the reason behind the death of the SAFTA award-winning actress.
According to an email photo published by City Press, MLA’s artist manager Wesley Mark released an official statement revealing the cause of Mokgapa’s death. The statement reads as follows:
“The South Africa film and television industry has suffered a loss in the passing of local actress Shoki Mokgapa. After a long struggle with clinical depression and anxiety, she took her life on Tuesday 25th September at the age of 34. She was a brave woman who had been seeking help but the disease proved to be stronger than her.
Known for her work in ‘The Lab’, ‘Intersexions’ and ‘Swartwater’ Mokgapa stole the hearts of many audiences in the role of Rachel in the Afrikaans language film ‘Sink’, a role that her a SAFTA award in 2017 for best actress in a feature film.
Her family and friends are currently together, going through the process of mourning and burial. They celebrate their daughter and appreciate all the love that her fans and peers have extended to them. The date and time of her funeral is still yet to be decided. The memorial is under planning for Tuesday the 2nd October 2018” wrote Wesley Mark from MLA.

UPDATE: Shoki Mokgapa committed suicide
A statement from Shoki's agency, MLA, has confirmed that the star had committed suicide after "a long struggle with clinical depression and anxiety".
